The Shed is the concluding phase of UTAS’s $304 million relocation to the Inveresk Precinct, designed to enhance accessibility, openness, and community engagement. As a state-of-the-art facility, it supports interdisciplinary health and science education, providing modern spaces for 160 staff and 1,500 students. The elongated twin-shed design, inspired by Launceston’s historic railway sheds, integrates a central atrium to foster collaboration and connection between the university and the city.

Fielders ARAMAX® in aluminium played a crucial role in The Shed’s construction, with 3,470 m² used for roofing and 2,035 m² for perforated cladding. This material allowed for spans of up to 20 meters without secondary structural support, reducing material usage while maintaining strength and sustainability. The perforated façade enhances natural light while optimising thermal comfort. The recyclable aluminium supports the project’s low-carbon benchmarks, contributing to a 35% reduction in embodied carbon compared to similar buildings

The project required innovative execution, with on-site rollforming improving efficiency and minimising transportation impacts. Collaboration between Wardle, Fairbrother Construction, and Fielders ensured ARAMAX® was seamlessly integrated into both structural and architectural elements, reducing complexity and costs.

The Shed’s impact extends beyond education. It revitalises Launceston’s CBD, aligning with UTAS’s environmental goals and demonstrating leadership in low-carbon, recyclable construction. City officials and government representatives have praised the project for its positive contributions to sustainability, education, and urban development.

By pushing the boundaries of material innovation and collaboration, The Shed sets a new benchmark for educational infrastructure, blending industrial heritage with modern sustainability principles. Fielders takes pride in contributing to this transformative project, showcasing the potential of ARAMAX® in ambitious architectural designs.
