The Blacktown Exercise and Sports Technology Hub (BEST) in Rooty Hill, Sydney, is a $100-million facility showcasing the versatility of Fielders SlimDek 210®. Set to become an internationally significant sporting precinct, the Hub’s architecture, inspired by Blacktown’s diverse cultures as well as reflecting elements of sporting gear and apparel, aims to establish it as a local landmark.
“The building had a very complex architectural and interior design intent which required innovative structural engineering ideas to realise,” said Mark Wu, Structural Engineer and Associate Director at Adams Engineering.
FIELDERS SOLUTION
The intricate floor geometry of the Hub presented substantial challenges. Fielders’ engineering team, led by National Engineering Manager Marko Stankovic, developed a structural steel design using 3,000 square meters of SlimDek 210® composite steel formwork to meet the project’s complex architectural demands.
Leveraging BIM expertise, each SlimDek 210® sheet was precisely modelled in 3D for millimetre accuracy before roll-forming, enabling Santana Stud Welding to install the flooring with exceptional precision.
“The advantages in floor performance, cost, construction program, and quality were far superior to other systems considered, convincing the builder that our SlimDek 210® proposal was the best way to deliver this complex floor,” explained Marko Stankovic. Mark Wu added, “We also selected SlimDek 210® because it requires minimal propping during construction, greatly improving efficiency by freeing up the lower floors for fit-out.”
PROJECT EXECUTION
Fielders’ early involvement was crucial. Jack Huang, Fielders Business Development Manager, initiated engagement during the design process, providing continuous support with structural designs and coordination. Once approved, Fielders’ drafting team prepared detailed decking layouts and service coordination plans, supported by a cloud-based 3D digital model for real-time clash detection, reducing on-site issues and enhancing safety.
Huang conducted multiple site inspections, ensuring adherence to best practices and addressing logistical queries.
“Fielders have a very responsive engineering team. They were willing to share their knowledge and train our engineers in composite deck design,” commented Mark Wu.
OUTCOMES
The Blacktown Hub, now open to the public, enhances health outcomes for Western Sydney, serving elite athletes and providing a centre for sports science and allied health services. The project highlighted the advantages of the Fielders’ KingFlor® composite steel formwork range, with SlimDek 210® proving a versatile and reliable solution.
“The accuracy demanded by the complex floor geometry and enabled by our steel composite design was unrivalled by traditional construction methods,” noted Marko Stankovic.
CONCLUSION
Innovation and collaboration were pivotal in delivering this landmark project. The Hub, housing organisations like Blacktown City Council, Australian Catholic University, and Sydney West Sports Medicine, exemplifies the capabilities of SlimDek 210® and the expertise of the Fielders team.
