At National Storage’s Tullamarine site, Fielders SlimDek 210® enabled the successful addition of a breezeway with a floor-to-floor height exceeding 7 metres to accommodate a drive-through format. With the project aiming to boost usable space while meeting tight structural and scheduling requirements, the system’s long-span, unpropped steel formwork design provided the perfect solution.
The key challenge was installing suspended floors over the breezeway with a height exceeding 7 metres, all within an active facility. SlimDek 210® eliminated the need for back-propping, allowing the team to maximise internal clearances and commence fit-out works just two days after concrete pour, allowing for saving of time and reducing site congestion.
In total, 7,500m² of suspended floor area was installed. Fielders played a hands-on role, providing early design input, installation guidance, QA support, and on-site workshops in collaboration with Hutchinson Builders, GIGIX, and Projex Partners.
The installation process was simple, repeatable, and efficient, even for teams new to the system. Clear documentation and proactive technical support minimised risk and helped keep the project moving.
According to Hutchinson Builders’ Project Engineer Robin Ranjit, SlimDek 210® improved site safety and trade coordination. “This system allowed us to go directly under the slab the day after to commence cleaning, which then the next day allowed works to commence underneath at a quicker pace.”
Ultimately, the success of the Tullamarine upgrade came down to smart system selection and early collaboration across all delivery partners.
