The Western Sydney International (WSI) Airport is one of Australia’s most significant infrastructure projects – its first new major airport in over 50 years. With Sydney’s aviation capacity expected to double in the next 20 years, this landmark development is being built with longevity, functionality, and best practice at its core.
To help realise this vision, Fielders’ Design Solutions Group (DSG) partnered with lead contractor Multiplex to contribute an innovative structural decking solution.
Fielders DSG was established to deliver technical excellence and customer support from concept to completion. More than two years before construction commenced, DSG engaged with Multiplex to understand key project metrics and technical project requirements. This early collaboration led to the recommendation of a bespoke structural solution using Fielders SlimDek 210® composite decking – an approach that drastically improved efficiency and saved months on the construction schedule.
SlimDek 210® features a unique trapezoidal shape and deep rib profile, allowing unpropped spans of up to seven metres. This capability an alternative to conventional concrete beams and slab construction, instead using large-span composite slabs supported by XLERPLATE® steel welded beams. The benefits extended beyond structure, enabling faster build times, reduced on-site labour and materials, and quicker interior fit-out.
Alongside SlimDek 210®, approximately 25,000 m² of Fielders KF57® was also specified. DSG’s Marko Stankovic and Jack Huang remained actively involved, providing technical support throughout, attending site regularly to support Multiplex and its subcontractors during installation.
This solution, the first of its kind in Australia – and possibly globally – for this type of structure, underscores Fielders’ reputation as a forward-thinking, solutions-driven partner. Through DSG’s involvement, the WSI terminal design evolved to reflect innovation, efficiency, and technical leadership, with Fielders playing a pivotal role in helping to shape the future of major Australian infrastructure.
